The History of PanettoneLearn about the origins of panettone, the sweet Italian bread that represents Christmas
Panettone was created in Italy and the habit of having it at Christmas started in Milan. From Milan, it spread throughout Europe, and later, worldwide. There are several legends regarding the origin of panettone, but among the most interesting and known versions is that, back in the 15th Century, a young man born to a wealthy family fell in love with a plebeian, the daughter of a baker. The father of the young girl didn´t approves their relationship. So, the young boy started working at their bakery as an assistant to show he was a good person and created a different sweet bread in which he added candied fruit.
The recipe became known for being delicious and having a unique shape that resembles a church dome. Given the success of the recipe, the young man disclosed it as an invention designed by Mr. Toni, the young girl’s father, and it became known as Toni’s Bread, or Pane Toni in Italian.
In Brazil, the tradition picked up. It is present in all holidays parties and has become a good gift option. Filled with candied fruit, the traditional panettone has long been a Christmas tradition in Brazil. Originally, panettone is a cake made with yeast dough, wheat flour, milk, eggs, raisins, and fruit, but lately it has been gaining new versions and flavors.
Supermarkets’ and specialized stores’ shelves offer a lot of options, among which some are made with typically Brazilian ingredients. You can find panettones filled with chocolate chips, mousse, ice cream, truffles, dulce de leche, guava paste, or cupuassu, among other flavors. Its packaging has also become sophisticated, and now, is better designed and customized, which makes it a perfect gift for the holidays.
